Udutu, a company that provides Web-based e-learning software and services, today announced what it calls the real revenue-generating application with business usability for social networking site Facebook (News - Alert).

This application, Udutu’s Learning Management System, is designed to help businesses, educators and government entities manage the e-learning process without expensive software and infrastructure. Officials from the company say it’s first application of its kind that is not based upon advertising for generating revenue from Facebook.

This LMS developed for Facebook by Udutu can be integrated with other social network Web sites, according to the company, such as MySpace (News - Alert), LinkedIn and Bebo, and makes way for small and large corporations, government organizations, schools and other businesses for conducting various courses to take advantage of the features and functionality of Facebook. Users will be able to publish course material, control access, track learner progress, collect payment and see the results after completion of a session staying at the Facebook site itself, company officials say.

The Udutu LMS is a purely Web-based solution with no licensing fees that enables course creation and learner management functionalities to a wide range of small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) and individuals unable to harness traditional LMSs due to their cost and complexity, according to the company.

Deniz Susar, assistant public administration officer in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ Division for Public Administration and Development Management, said that with sharp change in the technology landscape, people are becoming more comfortable with conducting business online, and organizations must react accordingly if they want to succeed. Susar said he hoped that Udutu’s new LMS for Facebook will jumpstart a whole new collaborative approach to training and knowledge sharing.

The Udutu LMS is powered by the MyUdutu Web-based course authoring software, and lets anybody quickly and easily publish and upload course material directly from MyUdutu into Facebook. SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model), the industry standard ensuring the interoperability with any standards-based e-learning course offering (such as MyUdutu) is supported by the Ududu LMS.

Roger Mundell, a founder and chief executive officer of Udutu, said that the new learning management module being introduced by Udutu stands to transform Facebook and other popular social sites into a useful business platform, where employees can communicate with and mentor each other. He said that while many organizations debate the positive or negative impact that social networking has on productivity, there exists a great demand from companies that recognize the value in engaging with their employees in an environment where they’re already comfortable.
