In a sign of how communications technology is helping connect people around the globe, a San Jose, California-based company’s virtual meeting system will debut in two Vietnamese demonstration centers, the product’s developer announced today.
Cisco’s (News - Alert) so-called “TelePresence” system is among the most widely anticipated technologies being shown in Hanoi and Ho Chih Minh City, according to Le Duc Hoa, VTN deputy general director of Vietnam National Telecoms. The agency is helping to arrange the demonstration.
After Singapore, Vietnam is the second nation in Southeast Asia to use TelePresence, according to James Chia, general director of Cisco Vietnam.
“That shows the immense appetite for technology in this market,” Chia said. “The Vietnamese understand the benefits of ICT (information and communications technology) very well and are not afraid to make the investments to make the leap to the latest technologies available. The network is the platform on which the Vietnamese will use ICT to ramp up economic growth in the country.”
Cisco said that TelePresence creates the feeling of an in-person meeting by using life-size, ultra-high-definition 1080p video and spatial audio.
An increasingly popular alternative to large in-person meetings or vexing audio conferences, virtual meetings are being introduced by more and more companies. Many Web sites offer space to hold password-protected online meetings where participants can share applications and documents and even speak to each other.
The systems share features, such as whiteboard to write notes and the abilities to load PowerPoint presentations and share live applications with other users.
The Cisco technology takes the further step of making participants feel as though they’re looking at each other from across a table.
Also being featured in the two demonstration centers are Cisco Unified Communications (News - Alert), IPTV
Hoa said the two demonstration centers provide an advanced technological showcase designed to show individuals and organizations in Vietnam the potential benefits of ICT for work, play, education and everyday life. Similar centers could eventually spring up throughout Vietnam, he said.
Cisco products are supplied in Vietnam by Cisco Systems International, BV.
