TIA Updates Standards on VoIP Supplementary Services Descriptions

By Jessica Kostek
TMCnet Channel Editor

Everything in life can use a little upgradin’ every once in a while, and VoIP is not above an exception. The Telecommunications Industry Association (News - Alert) (TIA), an advocacy, standards development, business development and intelligence for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, recently updated several standards in the TIA (News - Alert)-1126 Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Supplementary Services Descriptions series.

The updated standards are:
  • TIA-1126.553 Customized Ring Back Tone
  • TIA-1126.554 Directory Assistance
  • TIA-1126.555 Inbound Call Restriction/Anonymous Call Rejection
  • TIA-1126.556 Outbound Call Restriction
  • TIA-1126.558 Terminating Identification Presentation
  • TIA-1126.559 Terminating Identification Restriction
  • TIA-1126.562 Voice Message Retrieval

The TIA-1126 contains a description of supplementary telecommunication services in the Multi-Media Domain system. Intended to describe services and features so that the manner placing calls can use the features and services while remaining consistent from system to system. The TIA-1126 doesn’t require specific service offerings of all service providers; a service provider may offer all or a subset of these supplementary services.

Describing a set of wireless features, which enable use in any system the TIA-1126 standards set consists of features that are likely to be used when roaming, and also features necessary to implement full intersystem operation, the company said in a statement.

Because of the nature of IP-based telecommunications, and associated improvements in network capabilities, there are some deviations from the circuit-switched equivalents. TIA-1126’s goal in the series is to achieve service consistency between Circuit-Switched wireless systems and Packet-Switched systems without unduly restricting possible improvements that may be feasible in VoIP.

The TIA-1126 suite was formulated under the cognizance of the TIA Engineering Committee TR-45 Mobile & Personal Communications Systems (News - Alert), TR-45.2 Subcommittee on Wireless Intersystem Technology, said the company.
