Global Crossing Adds SIP Refer Feature to its VoIP Suite

IP solutions provider Global Crossing (News - Alert) has added session initiation protocol (SIP) Refer feature to its voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) services portfolio.

With this new feature, enterprises and IP-based application service providers can use their IP networks “efficiently” while transferring incoming calls to the location or party, according to company officials.

A signaling protocol, SIP is used for “set-up” and “tear down” of multimedia communication sessions in voice and video calls. The design of SIP Refer enables IP equipment to perform a call transfer automatically.

Officials said that SIP Refer can perform this functionality without attendant intervention. Also, the call can be transferred to any on-net or off-net phone number while removing the company’s equipment from the call path.

Once a call is transferred, a port on the customer equipment is released, and also the capacity being used on the IP network, said officials.

Using SIP Refer and its automated functionality, David Lemelin, senior analyst for Business IP Communications at In-Stat (News - Alert), noted that enterprise customers will be able to provide targeted customer service using their VoIP network.

According to the company, its suite of VoIP services such as Global Crossing VoIP Outbound; Global Crossing Toll-Free; Global Crossing VoIP Local Service; and Global Crossing VoIP On-Net Plus will now feature SIP Refer.

Global Crossing offers a full range of secure data, voice, and video products. Unlike voice services based on public Internet transport, company’s fully meshed multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) network ensures that VoIP calls are delivered with “minimal” latency, packet loss and jitter.

Last month, company announced high-definition enhancements to its existing IP Video conferencing service, offering face-to-face collaboration between dispersed business locations around the world. The service includes the ability to increase standard definition images. In addition, it comes with interactive Web reservations and online scheduling tool.

Additionally, the same month, company also announced that it completed building network for CIBE Participações Empreendimentos (CIBEPar). The network is being used to deliver satellite and terrestrial data transmission, data center, dedicated Internet access and managed security services.
