Panduit Drives Major Advancements in Fiber Optics

By Erin Harrison, Senior Editor

Fiber optics have largely revolutionized the telecommunications industry and are significantly evolving through new developments in performance standards. Despite the countless miles of fiber optic cabling laid, the demand for higher bandwidth and high capacity cables is still increasing.

In an effort to enhance its portfolio of high-performance fiber optic solutions and meet the needs for faster processing speeds and greater storage capabilities, industry leader Panduit recently announced the introduction of its OM4 Fiber Optic System through its Unified Physical Infrastructure (UPI) vision.
Panduit offers a comprehensive line of high speed data transport products including the OM4 system, most of which exceed industry requirements for data and telecommunication applications.

Company executives say the OM4 Fiber Optic System delivers “unmatched reliability and scalability to enable enterprise application availability and agility.”

In an interview with TMC (News - Alert), Dr. Rick Pimpinella, fiber research manager at Panduit, offers insight into system performance and surpassing the industry norm. “We’ve taken tremendous steps to guarantee system performance. Our bandwidth – our minimum EMB – actually exceeds the industry standard, currently the standard specifies a minimum effective modal bandwidth of 4700 MHz·km, and we specify a minimum of 5,000 MHz·km in the U.S.” he said. “We do that in order to get that extra margin that we need to guarantee system performance.”

The OM4 system integrates multi-fiber low loss MTP and single fiber connectivity solutions with premium grade high-performance laser optimized multimode fiber (with a minimum EMB of 5000 MHz·km) to deliver more consistent performance and reliability of critical systems, delivering first rate reliability and scalability to allow for enterprise application availability and agility.

In addition, integrated cutting edge fiber technology and comprehensive pre-testing ensures maximum performance and  integration of 10Gb/s Ethernet and 8Gb/s Fibre Channel network capabilities and beyond, with the goal of minimizing physical infrastructure risk. “As a result of our continued research into multimode fiber performance and our active participation in standards committees, we can now offer the next progression in high performance optical connectivity. Panduit is able to offer a fiber system that exceeds the bandwidth specification being proposed in the draft standard for OM4,” explained Dr. Pimpinella.
